CERTIFICATION IN ELECTRONICS RECYCLING – R2/RIOS
There is one set of best practices for electronics recycling endorsed by the EPA: R2. And there is one accredited certification program built specifically for recyclers to meet the R2 requirements: RIOS. Join us in this short course to learn the requirements from the consultant who helped develop and test them, the process from the auditor who can certify you, the execution from a recycler who has done it, and the impact this will have on the domestic and international marketplace. If you really want to understand how to achieve certification, you can’t miss this course!
Course Organizer & Moderator: Rike Sandlin, Intechra
Instructors: Rike Sandlin, Intechra; Doug Smith, Sony; Robin Ingenthron, World Reuse, Repair and Recycling Association (WR3A); Betsy Delaney, First Environment; Veryl Horsley, SGS Systems & Services Certification; Cindy Erie, E-World Recyclers
OPTIMIZING PROFITS IN ELECTRONICS RECYCLING
Are lower commodity prices and the tough economy impacting your bottom line? A key to greater profits in the electronics recycling industry can be optimizing your product and service offerings. In this course, industry experts will share experiences and knowledge on a variety of services that can enhance revenue and margins, including Reuse, Asset Management, Logistics and Data Security – as well how to increase value in materials and component recovery.

The Basel Action Network (BAN) will present a pre-conference workshop on the accredited e-Stewards Certification program for electronics recyclers, asset managers, refurbishers and processors. This workshop will provide an overview of the new certification program, which will be fully launched and available in early 2010. The workshop will also provide an overview of the e-Stewards Standard for Responsible Recycling and Reuse of Electronic Equipment, the standard at the center of the e-Stewards Certification program.
The workshop will cover the following topics, and provide ample opportunity for questions and answers:

Performance Measures for Electronics Recycling Programs: How Can We Measure Effectiveness?
September 22, 2009
1:00 pm – 4:00 pm
With ten electronics recycling laws now in effect in various stages across the US, stakeholders are starting to look for ways to compare what elements of the models are working better than others. In order to make these judgments, programs need a level playing field of consistent, relevant, and quantifiable performance measures. Yet today, other than volumes collected in the programs and per capita calculations that are misleading due to inconsistent product scopes and covered entities, there are no metrics to make unbiased evaluations. This workshop will give an overview of effective performance measures, what measures have been used in other product stewardship programs, and what exists today for measuring electronics recycling success. Participants will then engage in an active discussion on desired and achievable performance metrics for electronics recycling programs going forward. The National Center for Electronics Recycling and the Product Stewardship Institute are convening this workshop to begin a dialogue on effective performance measures for electronics recycling systems and develop a plan to incorporating them into data and analysis going forward.
